Depending on our own vision of the world, of the universe, of history, it is quite possible for us to go through this very troubled period with deep trust. If we believe in a world dependent on the hazards of fate, or simply run by fate, then we should seriously worry. On the other hand, if we believe in an orderly universe, managed by a loving higher entity, then we can navigate the current crisis in the most profound serenity.
Those who believe that some of humanity’s spiritual masterpieces such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Koran, the Bible, the Tao-Te-Ching are deeply inspired works will find within their pages precious passages to maintain this trust. Thus, the Koran tells us “Put your trust in the Ever-Living, who never dies” (Surah 25:58) and “thou wilt find no refuge beside Him” (Surah 18:27) – not in your bank account, or your relationships, not even in your understanding of things … only in Him/Her!
As to the Bible, quotations expressing trust are so numerous one could fill entire pages with them. I have a small aide-memoire of such citations, and I meditate on a few of them each morning; this allows me to maintain a deep equanimity at all times.
“So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. “(Isaiah 41:10)
“You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.” (Psalm 139:5)
“All things God works for the good of those who love him.” (Romans 8:28)
“I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.” (Ed note “for you”) Exodus 23:20
Don’t hesitate to meditate on these passages also just before going to bed – they are more powerful than all the stimulants and sleeping aids in the world!
